Cuba reports thirty-two troop deaths in US military operation
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel declared January 5 and 6 as national days of mourning to honor those who “carried out their duties with honor” and displayed “fierce resistance,” reflecting Cuba’s longstanding commitment to international solidarity.
The Cuban government explained that the deceased personnel were on official assignments under the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior, sent at the request of Venezuelan authorities as part of bilateral cooperation.
Venezuela also paid tribute, with officials in Caracas stating it “honors the 32 Cuban combatants who gave their lives in the fulfillment of their duty, in the context of cooperation and defense missions.”
US President Donald Trump had previously said that a significant number of Cuban security forces assigned to protect Maduro were killed during the raid.
Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, arrived in New York late Saturday and remain in custody at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, facing US federal charges linked to drug trafficking and alleged ties to gangs designated as terrorist organizations. Maduro has denied the allegations, while Venezuelan officials have called for the couple’s release, describing the US operation as illegal and a breach of Venezuela’s sovereignty.
