Cuban Leader Raises Concerns Over U.S. Energy Restrictions

(MENAFN) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel held talks in Havana with Democratic members of the U.S. Congress, focusing on the impact of Washington’s energy-related sanctions imposed on the Caribbean country. The discussions highlighted the strain these measures have placed on Cuba’s economy and infrastructure.

During their five-day visit, Representatives Pramila Jayapal and Jonathan Jackson engaged in meetings not only with Díaz-Canel but also with Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla and Cuban lawmakers, before concluding their trip on Sunday.

Sharing his remarks on the social media platform X, Díaz-Canel stated, “Upon receiving U.S. congressmembers @RepJayapal and @rep_jackson, I denounced the criminal damage caused by the #blockade, particularly the consequences of the energy siege decreed by the current U.S. government and its threats of even more aggressive actions. I reiterated the willingness of our Government to sustain a serious and responsible bilateral dialogue and to find solutions to the existing differences,” emphasizing Cuba’s openness to constructive engagement despite tensions.

In a unified declaration, the visiting Democratic legislators criticized policies enacted during the administration of Donald Trump, arguing that they have led to “untold suffering.”

"This is cruel collective punishment — effectively an economic bombing of the infrastructure of the country — that has produced permanent damage. It must stop immediately," they said.
