Russia Denounces US Actions Aimed at Squeezing Cuba’s Economy
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the United States’ recent executive order that declared a national emergency and created a process to impose tariffs on goods from any country that sells oil to Cuba. She said the policy amounts to illegitimate coercion and targets Cuba’s leadership and citizens with prohibitive measures.
“What we see is yet another radical recurrence of Washington’s strategy of maximum pressure on the Island of Freedom, aimed at its economic suffocation,” Zakharova said, arguing that unilateral sanctions against independent states are unacceptable. She also expressed confidence that Cuba will maintain effective foreign economic ties despite these challenges.
Zakharova added that categorizing Russia and other countries as “hostile” or “malign” in the context of the tariff plan won’t help stabilize dialogue between Moscow and Washington or improve diplomatic efforts. She said Russia’s cooperation with Cuba isn’t directed at any third party and affirmed her country’s commitment to deepening economic relations for the benefit of both peoples and broader security.
The US move to levy tariffs on nations supplying oil to Cuba was set up after an executive order signed by the US president that invoked a national emergency. The intent behind the policy is to pressure Cuba by restricting its access to crucial fuel supplies — notably coming after disruptions to Venezuelan oil deliveries following the capture of Venezuela’s president. Mexico, which had been one of Cuba’s key suppliers, warned that such tariffs could spark a humanitarian crisis if imposed. Meanwhile, Cuba’s own leadership has blasted the US measures as an attempt to squeeze its economy and stifle its government.
