Trump states US is in charge of Venezuela now

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump declared on Sunday that the United States is “in charge” of Venezuela after a military operation resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, who were brought to the US to face criminal charges.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump was asked whether he had communicated with Venezuela’s acting president, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, appointed by the country’s top court on Saturday. He responded, "We're in charge," and added that his remarks were deliberately bold.

Trump indicated that the US requires full access to Venezuela’s resources, including oil, to facilitate the country’s reconstruction. He warned that Rodriguez “will face a situation probably worse than Maduro” if she fails to cooperate.

Regarding the rebuilding efforts, he stated that major US oil companies would spearhead infrastructure reconstruction, investing billions without government funding. "The big oil companies (are) going to go in and they’re going to fix the infrastructure. They’re going to invest money. We’re not going to invest anything. We’re going to just take care of the country," he said.

Trump also noted that many of Maduro’s Cuban security personnel were killed during the early Saturday raid. "No deaths on our side, but there was a lot of death on the other side, unfortunately. But a lot of Cubans were killed yesterday trying to protect him," he added.

Reports cited by media indicate that the death toll from the operation has reached 80, with the figure expected to rise according to senior Venezuelan officials.
